Dead Sea Scrolls and More
Today (Monday, August 20), Dina and I
went to the Israel Museum. The museum is
large, modern and beautiful. Before we
went to see anything we sat down and Dina had a snack and I had a piece of wonderful apple pie and
some iced tea! It was great.
We saw a vast archeological exhibit with
thousands of artifacts and a new exhibit on the life and times of Hasidic
Jews. The highlights of the day for me
were the large scale outdoor model of Jerusalem in the Second Temple Period,
and of course the Shrine of the Book containing the Dead Sea Scrolls! Unfortunately but not surprisingly, we were
not allowed to take pictures of the scrolls.
I only got a few pictures of other things in and around the museum but
it was fascinating to see all the amazing things there.
Behind me is the Shrine of the Book,
which contains the Dead Sea Scrolls. It
was amazing to get to see them close-up.
And here are a few pictures of the
large detailed model of Jerusalem as it would have looked in the Second Temple
Period, up to near the end of the first century c.e. The model is 1:50 to scale and covers about
an acre!
